NDP MPPs congratulate residents, families for work in cancelling increased fees at retirement homes

SUDBURY – NDP MPPs Jamie West (Sudbury) and France Gélinas (Nickel Belt) congratulated residents and their families of the Walford and Lasalle retirement homes for their work in pressuring the homes to cancel their proposed $106 increase in monthly fees.

“I am very proud of the people who wrote letters to the premier and the minister for seniors, speaking out against this injustice,” said Gélinas. “ I am very happy to tell them, they won. The Oxford Living Corporation backed down. Bravo.”

Oxford Living, the company that owns the retirement homes, sent a letter to residents outlining an increase in their monthly fees of $106. It was described as an “Enhanced Health and Safety Protection fee,” and was expected to begin in March, 2021.

“Obviously our elderly loved ones deserve better supports and protections during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, these seniors are on a fixed income and cannot afford to boost an already profitable company’s bottom line under the guise of an ‘Enhanced Health and Safety Protection fee,’” said West.

Through pressure from residents and their family members, and support from their MPPs, Oxford Living decided to cancel the increase.

On Tuesday, Jan. 12, MPPs West and Gélinas received written confirmation from the Chief Operations Officer at Oxford Living that the increase was indeed cancelled.
